Physical Description: Shadow is just a bit shorter than average. She’s quite thin, but not entirely without feminine curves. She has straight dark hair which she keeps cut short so that it’s out of her way and she doesn’t have to fuss with it. Her most noticeable features are her wide eyes; dark brown and expressive, it’s easy to see what Shadow is thinking just by looking into her eyes. She almost always wears practical, comfortable clothing in dark colors, mostly black and deep earth tones. She has a necklace, a simple silver spiral on a black cord, which she wears at all times.

Personality: Shadow is calm, caring, and dependable. She is driven by the need to fix things and make things right. If anyone she knows is in trouble she will be right by their side without a second thought. She has a very strong personal sense of right and wrong, although she doesn’t care about formal rules and social norms. She is essentially optimistic, believing that there are always solutions and that she really can make the world better; however, she is also very down-to-earth, recognizing the small day to day hurts and problems that need to be dealt with first. Her convictions can lead her to be extremely stubborn and occasionally reckless, focused on doing what’s right or what needs to be done without regard to common sense or her own well-being. She tends to be quiet, preferring actions over words and staying to the sidelines unless she has something valuable to contribute.

Personal History: Sam considered herself perfectly average. She was an average student from a middle class, single parent family living in an unremarkable city. She didn’t have any siblings and her father skipped town when she was just a baby, so her mother was the only family she had. Her mother Maura was a social worker, devoted to her job and to her daughter. Sam was extremely close to her mom and although they sometimes fought she was always proud that she had a mother who she also considered her friend.

In school Sam focused most of her energy on art, sports, and occasionally science, physical and practical activities that appealed to her more than the more abstract theories she encountered in most classes. After finishing high school, she went to the local community college to become a paramedic. Everything about the career appealed to her: she would be fixing things and helping people and there was also something adventurous about it, never knowing what sort of emergency she would encounter next. She threw herself into her courses, studying furiously and getting better grades than she ever had in high school or grammar school.

Once she passed her examinations and finished her clinical rotations she took a job in Sundance. It wasn’t so very far from her home town and the prospect of working in the small but growing city intrigued her. She had a job and an apartment and things went wonderfully for the first few months. Then the disease began spreading and her job suddenly got much, much harder.

The virus was horrifying. People where dying everywhere and no one knew what to do or how to help them. The hospitals were packed. As the doctors and nurses began to fall ill and die as well, everyone with any medical training at all was expected to step up.

Her mother called her to tell her that she’d gotten sick and was going to the hospital in Laramie. Sam offered to go home and take care of her, but Maura insisted that Sam stay where she was. “They need you,” she said, the three little words sure to convince her unwaveringly responsible daughter. That was the last time Sam ever spoke to her mother. Maura Kelly died two days later.

Sam did all she could to help, going for days at a time without rest, trying to ease people’s pain and wishing there was some way to fix them. She saw so much death and suffering in those last weeks, but she stubbornly held herself together and kept working. It wasn’t until it was over, when everyone was gone and only the few young people were left, that she broke down. Not caring whether it was safe or not, she went back to her silent apartment and cried for hours and hours, curled up in the empty bathtub which somehow, irrationally, felt secure.

For weeks she went around in a haze of sadness and uncomprehending shock. What finally snapped her out of it was a boy with a broken arm. Venturing out again into the mess that was the town she ran into a teenage boy who’d been badly injured in the chaos. She helped him, doing what she could to set his arm and creating a makeshift sling out of her jacket. He told her that he’d come from a farm just outside of town. Sam helped him back to the farm and ended up staying there herself, joining the fledgling tribe.

She gained the nickname Shadow for her slight form and dark clothing and the way that she always seemed to be around, quietly watching and waiting to help out.

When Wolf eventually moved some of the tribe into the city, she went with them. She was willing to fight, and they’d need her medical skills there more than they would on the farm.
